A lesson from my Boston Terrier: Let Go!

By Kathy Carlton Willis

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. Hebrews 12:1 NLT

Jazzy, the zany Boston Terrier, loves to “pretend-bury” her treats. She tucks a rawhide in her blanket or a corner of the house. Then she pushes with her nose to throw dirt until she thinks the treat is hidden. The best part is to watch her fuss over the burial process, and then see her retrieve the treat immediately, with the decision to bury it elsewhere or partake in instant gratification. With Jazzy, this is all fun and games, but we practice a similar process that leads to our ruination.

How often do I say I’ve buried the hatchet? I make a big ordeal of the burial process, but I hide it about as long as Jazzy hides her treats. I snatch the burden back up and lick my wounds. My situation is so pitiful. I’m harmed beyond repair. Often, I bury and retrieve rather than ask Jesus to heal my broken heart.

How do we help the healing process by reliving those things that bring us down? When we ask Jesus to help us truly let it go we can move forward with joy.

It’s time to put away anything that hinders our journey. Let’s inventory our burdens and release them like helium balloons rather than hide them in the ground. That way, we can look up rather than bury our heads in the sand.

Father, help me to let go and then give me a mindset that says, “Let’s go!”
