Broken Pieces

By Michelle Cox

…forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  – Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV)

It was my turn to bring dessert for our family get-together. Since I’d just bought strawberries, I decided to make a pound cake so we could have strawberry shortcake.

I whipped all the ingredients together and put the pan in the oven. The cake was a thing of beauty when I took it back out—golden perfection with a crunchy crust on top. I let it cool for a few minutes and then turned it over to finish cooling on the rack. But the cake didn’t fall out. I gave it a gentle tap, but still no go, so I went to get a knife from the silverware drawer so I could loosen the edges.

As I turned back around, I realized my husband had walked into the kitchen. Before I could say anything, he gave the upside-down pan a mighty slam on the cooling rack. When he lifted the pan up, the look on his face was priceless, because the whole top of the cake had fallen off.

He moved quickly to pick it up and put it back on the cake, and when he did, it crumbled into dozens of pieces. He tried piecing it together, but just like Humpty Dumpty, he couldn’t put it back together again.

Friends, life is often like that pound cake. Everything in our lives is good—and then an unexpected circumstance slams into us or we make wrong choices, breaking our once golden world into shattered pieces. And no matter how much we try to fix it, we can’t get back what we once had. That can be heartbreaking and it can lead to defeat.

But don’t let that keep you from serving God, because just as we discovered that the broken pieces of the pound cake still tasted delicious, those broken pieces of our lives are still usable for Him. After all, there’s not one perfect person in the Bible, and look what He did with their lives!

Lord, I’m grateful that you can use even the broken pieces of my life.
