Finding Time to Pray Amid Piles of Laundry

By Jessica Chenoweth

…The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16

If you’re like me, most days go by in a blur. Between the mounting piles of laundry, grocery shopping, dropping off kids to their various activities, and cooking meals, finding free time is hard to come by. It can be easy during these seasons of busyness to allow our prayer lives to suffer. Besides since God knows everything anyway, is it really that important for us to pray?

In Luke 5:16, we learn that Jesus often withdrew Himself into the wilderness to pray. Despite the grueling schedule of ministry, Jesus shows us by example the importance of carving out those moments in our days where we can be alone with God.

Prayer deepens our relationship with God. In Matthew 26:41, Jesus instructs His disciples to pray for strength. Even though the disciples desired to do what was right, Jesus knew that they could not do it alone and neither can we. Pray gives us the opportunity to learn how to depend on Him to give us the strength we will need to run the race He has set before us.

Prayer changes things. Even though God does know all things, He chooses to be affected by our prayers. Remember when Peter was miraculously escorted out of prison by an angel? That was because of the faithful and constant prayers of the church.

We live in a society that is constantly vying for our attention. We mustn’t allow our hectic schedules to rob us of the power a vibrant prayer life will have in our lives. We have a God in heaven that is waiting to hear from us and wants to give us good things if we would only just ask.

Lord, thank you for the invitation to come before Your presence with boldness knowing You will always answer.
