An elementary school in the Commonwealth of Virginia has removed a Bible verse from a wall in the cafeteria. Click here join Todd’s private Facebook group.
“Lord, We thank you for this food,” the prayer read. “Bless it to the nourishment of our bodies and us to your service. Amen.”
It’s unclear what triggered a parent at High Point Elementary School. You’d think moms and dads would be encouraging their kids to pray over their lunch — especially inside a school cafeteria.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based atheist group, was contacted by the unnamed parent and they took immediate action.
“To protect students’ First Amendment rights, the district must remove this religious display from its cafeteria immediately, as well as any other religious displays it becomes aware of in its schools,” FFRF attorney Chris Line wrote to district Superintendent Keith Perrigan.
FFRF alleges “that religion is a divisive force in public schools.”
“The religious display needlessly alienated students and families who are non-Christian,” the out-of-town atheists said. They allege that almost half of Generation Z is religiously unaffiliated. In other words, a lot of kids don’t believe there’s a Higher Power to bless their food.
Instead of fighting back the school district waved the white surrender flag.
“All reports were investigated and addressed appropriately,” the superintendent wrote to the atheists.
Upon further inquiry, FFRF confirmed that the display has been removed.
“School districts exist to educate, not indoctrinate into religion,” FFRF’s Annie Laurie Gaylor said. “Young, impressionable students — who are a captive audience — should never be expected or prodded to engage in religious rituals in our secular public schools.”
