Lawsuit: Maine School Refuses to Let Kids Recite Pledge of Allegiance

American school children for generations have recited the Pledge of Allegiance – one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

But not in Falmouth, Maine.

Christopher Hickey filed a lawsuit against the school department alleging that during the two years his son attended Falmouth High School they did not recite the pledge of allegiance. Mr. Hickey was bothered that there was no structured recitation of the pledge.

“The lawsuit highlights a straightforward violation of Maine law and the Falmouth School Department’s own policy,” wrote attorney Jack Baldacci in an email to the Press Herald.

“My client, Christopher Hickey, is seeking to ensure compliance so that his son Clayton, and all Falmouth students, can benefit from this important civic tradition,” Baldacci continued. “We’re optimistic the court will act promptly to reinstate it.”

Traditionally, the pledge was recited by a student or a principal over the public address system. Students were given the option of whether to stand or sit.

The school district suggested it may have just been an oversight.

“At Falmouth High School, students are welcome to say the Pledge of Allegiance if they choose,” a district spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. ” Now that this matter has been brought to our attention, we plan to take steps to provide an opportunity during the school day for students who wish to say the Pledge of Allegiance to do so during a designated time.”

Mr. Hickey’s lawsuit has generated quite a bit of buzz around town. One Army veteran says the pledge is what makes America America.

So many of our fellow countrymen sacrificed their lives so that the star-spangled banner could wave over the land of the free and the home of the brave. It seems the least we can do is stand at attention, hand over heart and pledge our allegiance.

A NOTE FROM TODD: For years I’ve had a passion to fix what is broken in American newsrooms. Many years ago we launched an internship program that focused on raising up Christian and Conservative journalists and placing them in secular newsrooms across the country. We are now launching a foundation that will help us grow those efforts. Many of you have been longtime readers and viewers and listeners. I’m inviting you to join me in this effort by becoming a subscriber or a sponsor! Our goal is to build a digital newsroom that will provide wall-to-wall coverage of the America First movement. Click here to contribute!
