A Muslim-American student at Washington University in St. Louis, who was caught on video desecrating a memorial to the victims of the September 11, 2001 Muslim terrorist attacks, should be arrested, Young America’s Foundation president and former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker told the Todd Starnes Show Monday.
Fadel Alkilani, a student senator at the university was filmed throwing 2,977 American flags into trash bags Saturday.
“I actually think he needs to be arrested and prosecuted,” Walker said. “Missouri law…is very clear here. He intentionally did this. We know intent because the police told him not to and he came back and did it again. It’s on video. There’s not dispute about it. And the law in Missouri says that if you create damage more than $750, which this is…he’s guilty of a lower level, but it’s a felony and needs to face consequences for this.”
Akliani posted a message on Instagram defending his criminal behavior.
“Muslims such as I have faced fear, harassment and Islamophobia from those who unjustly use the victims of 9/11 as a political cudgel,” Alkilani wrote. “Those who died during 9/11 deserve better than to be used as a political tool by those who seek to excuse American imperialism and Islamophobia.”
Alkilani also claims that he’s a victim — alleging that he’s been the target of a “massive harassment campaign propagated primarily by Washington University College Republicans, as well as the national Young America’s Foundation.”
Washington University condemned the student leader’s behavior but stopped short of saying whether he would face punishment.
“We condemn the interference with the expression of support by the College Republicans for the victims of the national tragedy that took place 20 years ago today,” the university said in a statement to YAF. “The actions surrounding this incident were not on behalf of the university or a university-sponsored organization. We value freedom of expression in all forms and will work to ensure that all students are able to express their points of view through appropriate channels without disrupting the rights of others to show support for causes they care about. This is a critical component of our core values and we are committed to facilitating free speech on our campus.”
Regardless, it appears the unrepentant Muslim student was intent on rewriting the narrative of September 11, 2001.
“Since 9/11, Islamophobic hate crimes have been higher than they ever were before. The United States invaded countries in the Middle East and Central Asia, and over 900,000 people have been killed because of the wars the United States has propagated. 37 million people have been displaced, with some reports stating that number reaches up to 59 million,” he wrote in a statement. “Any memorial of 9/11 that does not contend with these facts is not only incomplete, but it also amplifies pro-imperialist sentiment and actively disrespects those who have died because of American Invasion.”
Mr. Alkilani should be expelled from Washington University. He should face vandalism, theft of property and destruction of property charges.
And Mr. Alkilani should be counting his blessings that he committed those crimes in the most exceptional nation on Earth. Had he pulled a stunt like that in a country under Islamic rule, the penalty would have been much more severe.
