For more than 30 years American students have gathered on the fourth Wednesday of September to pray around flagpoles for their schools, their classmates and their country.
It’s called “See You at the Pole.”
Traditionally, the teenagers would wake up before sunrise and circle up around their schools’ flagpole. They would sing songs about God and then offer their petitions to the Almighty.
But school leaders in Boise, Idaho shut down the prayer rally. The students were ordered to cease and desist. The young Christians were told their prayers might disturb the peace.
The American Center for Law and Justice is representing the teenagers. They contend the school district violating the First Amendment. They say students have a constitutional right to pray privately and in public on school campus.
It just seems to me that our public schools have more pressing matters than cracking down on students who assemble to pray to God. Like – say – preventing school shootings or making sure graduates can write their names and make change at the Walmart.
