A North Dakota school board member is drawing the ire of military veterans after she refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance at a recent meeting.
Video posted on Facebook shows all of the board members rising with hand over heart while Kara Gloe remained seated. She shuffled papers around while others recited the pledge.
“It is disgraceful and it is disgusting with me being a military veteran and for all who have stood and fought for this flag, and some had paid the ultimate sacrifice and price,” Brad Schenck told television station KVLY.
“So sad the lack of respect for a country that gives us so much,” another local resident wrote on Facebook.
School Board member Matt Valan spoke up to defend Gloe’s decision.
“I may not agree with what you are doing, but I will defend to the death, your right to do this in this country,” he told the television station.
Yet others pointed out that Gloe’s disrespect happened while troops were still in harm’s way in Afghanistan.
“To see this type of political theatre at this time is shameful,” one citizen wrote on Facebook. “What a sad unappreciative person that doesn’t realize how blessed they are to live in this country.”
