A public university’s Instagram posted a video Friday of an NAACP student leader claiming Kyle Rittenhouse killed two black people, The College Fix reports.
James Madison University’s official Instagram story, which was taken over by student Daequan Nichols, shared the false information hours after Rittenhouse was found not guilty in Kenosha.
“I simply wanted to publicly announce that the verdict with the Kyle Rittenhouse case has been nothing more than a disgusting reminder about what it really means to be black in America…. We scream black lives matter but it doesn’t really matter,” Nichols said.
He added “the jury, the judge, anybody” did not find black lives valuable enough to charge “this man, with murdering and taking away two beautiful black lives at the ripe ages of 26 and 36.”
The two men Rittenhouse fatally shot in self-defense were white. Joseph Rosenbaum was a convicted child rapist who shouted on video “shoot at me n-word,” and Anthony Huber was guilty of a felony of domstic abuse and other charges.
Tina Ramirez, a Virginia GOP Congressional candidate, shared the video online.
“JMU is a publicly funded university that is now pushing political propaganda and misinformation from their social media accounts,” Ramirez tweeted. “JMU’s actions are unethical, as Kyle Rittenhouse was found innocent, and dangerous, as the post pushes false info that could lead to violence.”
Mary-Hope Vass, university spokesperson and director of communications, told The Breeze, the campus paper, that Instagram takeovers are a chance for audiences to learn about student activities and research.
“One of yesterday’s takeovers went into the personal opinion and viewpoints of a student, which are not necessarily reflective of the university,” Vass said.
