Coronavirus Updates: 112,000 Infected and 2,026 Deaths in U.S.

There are now more than 112,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and death toll reached 2,026 in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said his state’s cases grew 26% in one day, even with 65,000 test results pending.

President Trump told reporters today he is considering a mandatory quarantine and travel ban on New York City. He may also impose quarantines on New Jersey and parts of Connecticut. “Some people would like to see New York quarantined because it’s a hotspot — New York, New Jersey, maybe one or two other places, certain parts of Connecticut quarantined,” he said outside the White House.

The president and Defense Secretary Mark Esper were in Norfolk as part of a send-off for the Comfort, which is going to New York City to help the city combat coronavirus. Trump said the naval hospital ship is equipped with 12 operating rooms, 1,000 hospital beds, a pharmacy, an optometry lab, radiology, CAT-scan equipment, two oxygen-producing plants and a helicopter deck. “It’s stocked to the brim with equipment, medicines and everything you can think of,” he said.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has asked for any manufacturers who can help produce critically needed personal protection equipment for the state’s healthcare workers to contact his office. “If you are a manufacturer and you can make any of this stuff, we need to hear from you right away.” DeWine said during a press conference Saturday. “We received our share from the national strategic stockpile. But just like every other state, it was simply not enough.”

The U.S. has more confirmed cases of the coronavirus than any country in the world, surpassing China, where the pandemic began. There are now more than 85,000 cases in America and nearly 1,300 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. (see interactive map below).

Nearly 12.2 million people watched Trump’s briefing on cable channels according to Nielsen — plus millions more on streaming sites, and local news networks.

President Trump tweeted on Thursday evening that he had spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying he and Xi were “working closely together.”

“Just finished a very good conversation with President Xi of China. Discussed in great detail the CoronaVirus that is ravaging large parts of our Planet. China has been through much & has developed a strong understanding of the Virus. We are working closely together. Much respect!”

There are now 25 sailors who have tested positive for the coronavirus aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, just two days after the Pentagon announced that three sailors aboard the ship had tested positive for the virus, a Pentagon official confirmed to Fox News.

A total of 3.3 million unemployment claims were filed in the US — the highest number of initial jobless claims in history.

Los Angeles is closing all outdoor sports amenities to help people practice safe social distancing, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced today. These include skate parks, tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts, golf courses, swimming pools, and popular hiking trails like Runyon Canyon and Bronson Canyon.

Gov. Tate Reeves, the Republican from Mississippi, told the “Todd Starnes Radio Show” Monday that he reluctantly told his state’s citizens to consider staying home from church amid the coronavirus outbreak, but church doors in the state will remain open.

A Pennsylvania supermarket was forced to toss out more than $35,000 in groceries after a woman intentionally coughed on fresh produce, baked good and the meat counter.

Dr. Craig Smith, chair of the department of surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City, said the number of patients on ventilators at his hospital “more than doubled” in the past three days.
