Sen. Rand Paul (R–KY) is asking the Department of Justice to investigate Dr. Anthony Fauci for lying to Congress about gain-of-function research.
“I will be sending a letter to the Department of Justice asking for a criminal referral because he has lied to Congress. We have scientists that were lined up by the dozens to say that the research he was funding was gain-of-function,” Paul told Sean Hannity Tuesday.
“He’s doing this because he has a self interest to cover his tracks and to cover his connection to the Wuhan lab,” the Kentucky senator added.
The interview comes after the conservative lawmaker grilled Fauci on his claim from May 11 that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) never funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan, asking the doctor if he lied to Congress about his role in the research, according to Fox News.
“Dr. Fauci, as you are aware it is a crime to lie to Congress,” Paul told Fauci. “There will be responsibility for those who funded the lab, including yourself. You are obfuscating the truth.”
“Gain-of-Function research was done entirely in the Wuhan Institute… and was funded by the NIH,” Paul said, citing a Wuhan Virology report, Breitbart reported. “Do you wish to retract your statement from May 11 where you claimed that the NIH never funded gain of function research in Wuhan?” Paul asked.
“I have never lied before the Congress, and I do not retract that statement,” Fauci shot back. “You do not know what you are talking about quite frankly and I want to say that officially.”
