Police Say Gunman had Koran, Dressed in Islamic Garb

Fox News reports the gunman was a 53-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Senegal and was living in Pflugerville, Texas. There are also reports that a copy of the Koran was discovered in his vehicle. His clothing was emblazoned with the phrase, “Property of Allah” and he also was wearing an undershirt adorned with Iranian symbols.

The shooting occurred at Buford’s, a popular beer garden and nightlife destination on Sixth Street in Austin. A man opened fire shortly before 2 a.m. local time, officials said. At least two people were kiled and 14 others were injured. The suspect was shot and killed by police officers.

“I want to start by saying how fortunate we were,” Lisa Davis, the Austin police chief, said in an early morning news conference. Officers responded to the scene in less than 60 seconds.

A spokesman for the FBI said a news conference later Sunday morning that the gunman appears to have ties to a terror group, but that is still under investigation, Fox 7 in Austin reported.

“Obviously, it’s still way too early in the process to determine an exact motivation, but there were indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,” the FBI spokesman said. “Again, it’s still too early to make a determination on that, but we are investigating that very closely with our partners at the Austin Police Department.”

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) announced on X there were “concerning details” and that “federal authorities had been activated.”

“Prayers for the Texans killed and injured in this attack. Grateful for APD’s quick response taking down the shooter. Reports indicate it was premeditated,” the congressman wrote on X.

ORIGINAL STORY: Two American cities are reeling after separate mass shootings left multiple victims dead and injured, sending shockwaves through communities in Austin and Cincinnati.

In Austin, police confirmed that at least three people were killed and 14 others were wounded after gunfire erupted early Sunday at Buford’s Bar in a bustling entertainment district.

EMS Chief Robert Luckritz said three people were found dead at the scene and 14 people were injured and transported to hospitals. Of those injured, three were in critical condition.

“We received a call at 1:39 a.m. and within 57 seconds, the first paramedics and officers were on scene actively treating the patients,” Luckritz said.

Authorities described a chaotic scene as officers rushed to secure the area and render aid to victims.

“This is a heartbreaking day for our city,” Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during a press briefing, urging calm and cooperation as the investigation continues. “Our officers responded within minutes, and their priority was to stop the threat and save lives.”

Mayor Kirk Watson of Austin also weighed in on the tragedy, thanking public safety officers for their efforts. “I want to again reiterate my thanks to our public safety officers and officials that so rapidly were on the scene,” he said, calling their response “heroic.”

Investigators have not yet released a motive for the attack, and at least one suspect was fatally shot by police after they arrived.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away in Cincinnati, officials say as many as13 people were injured during a shooting at Riverfront Live, a popular music venue.

There is no word just yet on suspects or motives in either of the attacks.
