DEVELOPING STORY: Rep Lee Zeldin (R-NY) was attacked on stage and nearly stabbed Thursday night during a campaign stop. Watch video below.
Witnesses tell television station WROC that Zeldin was delivering a speech at a VFW hall in Perinton when a man jumped on stage, started yelling and then attacked the congressman. During the struggle, the suspect pulled out a blade.
A number of military veterans rushed to the stage and rescued the congressman. He was not injured.

“After speaking on bail reform, someone just tried stabbing New York Governor candidate Lee Zeldin in Fairport NY,” one eyewitness tweeted.

Congressman Lee Zeldin was attacked at a campaign event in Perinton Thursday night. Zeldin is the Republican candidate for governor in New York State.
Witnesses say Zeldin was giving a speech about bail reform at the VFW on Macedon Center Road when a man got on stage, started yelling, “wrestled with him a bit, and pulled a blade out.”
The alleged attacker was suppressed by AMVETS national Director Joe Chenelly. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said he was taken into custody.
A witness who was with Zeldin after the attack said Zeldin was not hurt, and took the stage again when it was over.WROC
