A black, gay Republican was savagely beaten in the streets Saturday afternoon outside the campaign headquarters of Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).
The victim, identified as Shawn Nelson, was campaigning for Republican Donnie Palmer, Presley’s opponent in the seventh congressional district race.
“Shawn Nelson, a conservative gay black man, was savagely beaten up today in Somerville,” Palmer wrote on social media. “These thugs are supporters of (Boston Mayor Michelle) Wu and Pressley.”
Video of the attack shows Palmer, who is also black, pummeling the men who brutalized Nelson.
“I obliged,” he told the Boston Globe. “Violence is never the answer, but it seems to be the first resort for radical progressives whenever they seek to silence Black Republicans.”
Palmer said Nelson was protesting the murder of Cayler Ellingson, the 18-year-old North Dakota boy who was murdered because of his political beliefs.
Ellingson’s alleged killer said the teen was a Republican extremist – a charge the family denies.
The Globe reports at least two men were arrested on charges of assault and battery.
The Massachusetts Republican Party saluted Palmer for stepping in and defending his supporters.
“Where is the outrage from the radical progressives,” the party wrote on social media.
The GOP called on Pressley and other Squad members to condemn the attack.
“The silence from the squad…of the vicious assault on a peaceful protestor who attended the squad rally is deafening,” the state GOP wrote.
This is what happens when President Biden calls MAGA Republicans a bunch of fascists and extremists. Words matter.
