The police officer who shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright meant to grab her Taser but mistakenly grabbed her service weapon, the police chief in Brooklyn Center outside of Minneapolis said.
Body camera footage was released Monday showing the deadly shooting categorized as an “accidental discharge.”

The officer yet to be identified fired a single bullet during the fatal shooting of Wright, a suspected gang member, Sunday, 10 miles from where George Floyd died. Black Lives Matter protesters immediately began rioting and looting Sunday.
At least 500 Minnesota National Guard personnel were activated in the Twin Cities area Monday in support of Operation Safety Net amid the murder trial for Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in Floyd’s death.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott issued a citywide curfew Sunday night after roughly 500 people gathered outside the police precint and clashed with officers.
“Our entire community is filled with grief following today’s officer-involved shooting of Daunte Wright, a 20 year old young man. Our hearts are with his family, and with all those in our community impacted by this tragedy,” Elliott said in a statement. “While we await additional information from the BCA [Bureau of Criminal Apprehension] who is leading the investigation, we continue to ask that members of our community gathering do so peacefully, amid our calls for transparency and accountability.”
