Security is being beefed up at shopping malls and other locations around Northern Virginia over credible threats of an ISIS terrorist attack. The attack is expected in the next few days.

We have increased our police presence throughout the county to include major thoroughfares, transit hubs, shopping plazas and shopping malls,” said Fairfax County Sheriff Kevin Davis.

The Department of Homeland Security’s intelligence chief John Cohen told CBS News that the terror groups want individuals to act on their own — so-called lone wolf attacks — overseas and at home.

“Right now we’re seeing a dramatic increase — or an increase — in online activity by media operations associated with different al Qaeda elements and Islamic State,” Cohen said.

The enhanced security measures will remain in place through the Halloween weekend.

“We have ramped up our presence at places where people shop, at places where people recreate, gather, dine. It’s our responsibility to do that we routinely do this,” Davis said at a news conference Friday.

Fairfax County officers expect to be on high alert around holidays, he said, but there is more reason to be cautious going into next week, WTOP reports.

“We have an election coming up next Tuesday where we’ll have increased patrols throughout the next several days out of an abundance of caution, because that’s what we do as a public safety agency,” Davis said.
