UPDATE: AFP reports at least two people are dead after a shooting on the popular Cancun beach outside a 5-star hotel.
Tourists in Cancun, Mexico rushed to shelter in the Hyatt Ziva hotel from the beach amid reports an armed gang entered a luxury hotel and abducted at least one person before leaving by boat.
The U.S. embassy in Mexico said consulate officials were looking into the situation.
Mike Sington, a retired Senior Executive at NBCUniversal, is tweeting about the situation from the scene.
“Guests are telling me they were playing volleyball on the beach, gunman approached firing gun,” Sington said. “Everyone ran from beach and swimming pools. Staff hustled us into hidden rooms behind the kitchens.”
