Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner has officially asked the Tennessee Sheriff’s Association to warn law enforcement nationwide about the possibility of a “public safety risk potential” once body cam footage from the arrest of Tyre Nichols is released.
And Newschannel 5 in Nashville reports the video could be released as soon as Friday afternoon.
Nichols died three days after he was brutally beaten during a traffic stop. His body looked like a “human pinata.”
To date, police have refused to release any information — other than to say there was a confrontation after Nichols fled from officers.
At least five Memphis Police officers have been fired and two Memphis Fire Dept. staffers have been placed on leave as a result of the incident. Police now confirm that even more officers are being investigated in connection to the case.
Someone leaked a letter from TSA executive director Jeff Bledsoe to the executive director of the National Sheriff’s Association.
Following is the letter sent by the Tennessee Sheriff’s Association:
Director Thompson,
At the request of Shelby County TN. Sheriff Floyd Bonner, Jr. I send this correspondence. Sheriff Bonner in consultation with Memphis PD Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis, request to notify our nation’s sheriffs via NSA, of the upcoming timeline. It is anticipated the videos from the use of force will be released publicly on Friday January 27, 2023 in the afternoon hours.
Due to the nature of the video’s contents it is believed it may spark responses outside of the traditional protest. There is a public safety risk potential to communities and peace officers expanding outside of the Shelby County (Memphis) TN. area.
The family of Tyre Nichols (deceased) met with officials and viewed the video yesterday with a press conference following the meeting. We anticipate an update on the investigation and any judicial proceedings this week as well. The incident involved five officers, and all five officers were terminated last week.

Bledsoe told the Daily Memphian that he could not comment on the contents of the letter.
“This was a law enforcement sensitive email not intended for public distribution,” Bledsoe wrote in correspondence with the newspaper. “Someone breached confidentiality by releasing this to media yesterday.”
Neither Sheriff Bonner nor Police Chief Davis responded to inquiries from KWAM NewsTalk Memphis seeking comment.
