DEVELOPING STORY: Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked at gunpoint Monday night outside a building that serves as a dormitory for members of Congress.
Axios reports as many as four men held guns to the Democrat congressman’s head and demanded his keys. They also stole his cell phone and drove off in his white Honda with Texas plates.
The suspects are described as black men wearing black clothing.
CNN reports that Cuellar was not injured.
In 2021 the congressman was blasted by the National Republican Congressional Committee for supporting a measure that would have defunded police departments.
“As crime continues to rise across the country, Texans won’t forgot that Henry Cuellar voted to make it easier to defund the police departments that keep them safe,” NRCC spokeswoman Torunn Sinclair said at the time.
There has been a massive uptick in crime across the nation’s capitol — including an increase in carjackings.
Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was attacked in her apartment building on Capitol Hill in February.
