The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office announced that SWAT members found the body of a man on Canfield Mountain. They located a firearm nearby. The sheriff has scheduled a press briefing at 9:30 p.m. mountain time.

Firefighters Still Taking Sniper Fire
FBI assets are headed to the scene in Coeur dâAlene to provide tactical and operational support. Sheriff Bob Norris says firefighters are still taking active sniper fire.
“We are prepared to neutralize this suspect as quickly as possible,” the sheriff said at a news conference.
The sheriff went on to say that they do not know if there is more than one gunman.
âWe donât know if thereâs one, two three or four,â shooters, Norris said, with officers reporting bullets coming from multiple directions. âWe will neutralize this threat.â

At least two firefighters were killed, many others were injured and an untold number of first responders and civilians are trapped on the mountain.
Untold Number of Gunmen Open Fire on First Responders
A number of firefighters were ambushed Sunday afternoon while responding to a fire in Coeur dâAlene, Idaho. It appears a brushfire on Canfield Mountain was intentionally set to lure first responders to the scene. The suspect is still on the run.
Firefighters pleaded on scanner traffic to send help. They described a horrifying scene where at least two battalion chiefs who were shot multiple times along with several police officers.
Chief Pat Riley of the Northern Lakes Fire District told television KHQ that law enforcement from multiple jurisdictions is assisting with the situation. The brushfire is still burning out of control.
“My immediate reaction was completely heartbroken. We trained for this. You never want to see it in your own community,” the chief told the television station.
Idaho Gov. Brad Little condemned the ambush in North Idaho and confirmed that “multiple heroic firefighters were attacked.”
“This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters,” the governor wrote on X. “I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more. Teresa and I are heartbroken. As this situation is still developing, please stay clear from the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to do their jobs.”

The Kootenai County Sheriffâs Office issued an alert to residents stating: âActive shooter at Canfield Mountain. Injuries are reported, but the extent is unknown. Avoid the area.â
Reporters describe a chaotic scene and a “major emergency unfolding.”
At least two first responders have been transported to the hospital via helicopter. This is a developing story and this page will be updated through the evening.
