UPDATE: The gunman is in custody and has been identified as Nigel Max Edge, 40. Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said he was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of common law-attempted first-degree murder. 

ORIGINAL STORY: At least three people are dead and many more were injured Saturday night when a gunman in a boat opened fire into a crowded restaurant at the Southport Yacht Basin in North Carolina. Click here to get breaking news alerts from Todd delivered to your inbox.

The Wilmington Star Online reports that a boat pulled up to the American Fish Company restaurant dock and a gunman began firing into the crowd.

The city’s public information officer tells the newspaper that at least three people were killed and at least 8 others were injured.

“There is an unknown number of injuries. Avoid the area and remain in your homes. Please report any suspicious activity immediately to 911,” the city warned residents in a social media post.

The gunman has not been apprehended. This is a developing story and this post will be updated.
