DEVELOPING STORY: There are growing concerns that pro-Hamas terrorists might try to stage an attack at tonight’s lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in Manhattan.
According to an NYPD threat assessment obtained by ABC News, “The U.S. continues to face a heightened and dynamic risk environment from a variety of extremists amid the ongoing Israel-Hams conflict and malicious actors may view mass gatherings, iconic locations and high-profile events as targets of opportunity during the holiday season.”
Pro-Palestinian supporters are planning to protest during the tree lighting, but the NYPD is still encouraging families to come out, saying they won’t allow any demonstrations to disrupt the celebration, television station WABC reports.
The NYPD said they will not tolerate any disruptions.
“If you want to get that message out there’s plenty of ways to do that, but we are not going to let you interrupt the festivities tonight,” Deputy Commissioner Tarik Sheppard said .”It’s not going to happen and we are going to be out here making sure it doesn’t.”
This 80-foot-tall Norway spruce will be lit for the holiday season, and tens of thousands of people are expected to come watch and kick off the holiday season.
WNBC reports that security is going to significantly higher than in previous years.
“There’s going to be some screening when you come in, we are going to be looking for bag checks,” the NYPD commissioner said. “Make sure people don’t have large items and the typical things that you can’t bring to places like stadiums. You can’t bring here tonight.”
