Two New York City police officers were trying to arrest a belligerent suspect when one of the officers was attacked by an angry bystander.
Disturbing video shows the unknown attacker pummeling the police officer and putting him into a headlock.
The crowd jeered and profanely taunted the officer as he was beaten to the ground.
“F-k him up,” one person shouted. “F-k him up.”
The officer suffered a gash to the head that required staples.
The NYC Sergeants Benevolent Association posted video of the attack and put the blame on City Councilman Corey Johnson.
Johnson backed a bill that would make it a misdemeanor for police to use any maneuver that restricts a suspect’s airflow.
“COREY JOHNSON your STUPID law is about to be signed by NYC STUPID Mayor it’s time you both take your community input & grab these perps yourself,” read the SBA tweet, posted with the video.
“Putting a cop in a headlock could mean a death sentence if they lose control of their gun,” an outraged law enforcement source told The New York Post in response to the video. “A cop in a headlock can’t maintain weapons control.”
