The bullet hit the 31-year-old officer under his police vest, sources said.

The gunman had at least 21 prior arrests and many New Yorkers are wondering why this monster was prowling the streets as a free man.

The National Fraternal Order of Police issued a statement condemning the killer.

“We will never forget that he was gunned down in cold blood by a career criminal with 21 previous arrests, who had no business being on streets. It is abhorrent and disgusting, that he was free to murder this officer,” they wrote in a statement.

Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton eulogized the young officer.

“The line-of-duty murder of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller is a tragedy for the NYPD and every New Yorker he so bravely protected,” Bratton said. “He was a guardian of our city and now a guardian at the gates of heaven. His legacy will forever be one of courageous, selfless service and the ultimate sacrifice.”

The gunman isn’t the only one with blood on his hands tonight.
