Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle told ABC News that the man who tried to assassinate President Trump was identified as a potential person of interest.
One Trump supporter was killed in the attack and two others were critically injured.
A police officer spotted Matthew Crooks on the roof about 30 minutes before the shooting happened. The officer took a photo and alerted state police.
“I’m being told that the shooter was actually identified as a potential person of suspicion. Units started responding to seek that individual out,” Cheatle told ABC News. “Unfortunately, with the rapid succession of how things unfolded, by the time that individual was eventually located, they were on the rooftop and were able to fire off at the former president.”
Cheatle said that law enforcement had actually been using the building as a gathering space. In other words, the sniper was literally just above them on the rooftop.
She also said that the Secret Service was aware of the security vulnerabilities presented by the building, but the decision was made not to put anyone on the roof.
“That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there’s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn’t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof. And so, you know, the decision was made to secure the building, from inside,” she said.
So now we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there was a complete security breakdown – that led to the deadly shooting attack. The only question left to resolve is whether the breakdown was the result of incompetence or some far more nefarious.
