“A good guy with a gun stopped a bad guy with a gun,” said national radio host and best-selling author Todd Starnes. “That’s how the Second Amendment is supposed to work.”
According to the Indy Star, Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said, “It appears that he had a rifle with several magazines of ammunition, entered the food court and began shooting.”
One of the dead is the suspected shooter, said Mayor Mark Myers. The gunman, an adult male, has not been identified. Police said he had been carrying a long rifle and several ammunition magazines.
Myers asid the gunman was shot “by an armed individual.”
Ison, the police chief, said the “good Samaritan,” a was a 22-year-old civilian from nearby Bartholomew County who “appears to be cooperating fully” with investigators.
“The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began,” Ison said, the Indy Star reported.
Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers issued a statement Sunday evening thanking the armed civilian for his “quick action and heroism” during the shooting.
“As of now we do not know the shooter’s identity or motive. We do know that someone we are calling the “Good Samaritan” was able to shoot the assailant and stop further bloodshed. This person saved lives tonight. On behalf of the City of Greenwood, I am grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation.”
“The young man clearly stopped what could have been a massacre,” Starnes said. “He should be honored and celebrated as the hero that he is.”
