Target workers and shoppers stood down and watched as a violent thug attacked and choked a New York City police officer.
The officer was working a paid security detail inside the store at Atlantic Terminal when the suspect went on a rampage. He threw the officer to the ground and at one point tried to strangle the officer.
The attack was captured on video and it also shows a number of people either watching or walking by without rendering aid.
The New York Post reports that the officer was treated for his injuries at the scene of the crime.
Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch called the video “incredibly disturbing” and was outraged that not a single person in the store came over to help the officer.
“We have a police officer in distress, and nobody helps him. Is this the city we want?” Lynch said in a statement. “Has this become normal? It has to stop.”
It’s downright shameful.
“We need your help on the street, and we need your help to force our reckless elected officials to do their job,” Lynch said.
Silence in the face of evil is evil itself, Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said. Not to speak is to speak, not to act is to act.
The men of New York City have a duty to stand up in the face of evil – no matter the cost.
