Fernando Villavicencio, a member of Ecuador’s national assembly, was attacked after a campaign event in the northern city of Quito on Wednesday.
Villavicencio was about to get into a car when a man stepped forward and shot him in the head at least three times. There are also reports that a grenade was detonated.
Villavicencio was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he was pronounced dead. He was 59.
The presidential election is scheduled to take place on August 20.
