Add Some Muscle to Your Prayer Life

By Sandra P. Aldrich

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened unto you. Matthew 7:7

Years ago, I asked God for a new job. I wanted my two-minute prayer to produce a phone call from a wonderful company with an incredible offer.

While I waited for a miracle, I read the Word. One morning, I was drawn to Matthew 7:7--“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened unto you.”

I was struck by the words “ask, seek, knock” and realized those are verbs of action. My action. I was doing plenty of asking, but everything else I had left to God.

Then I read the account of Jesus encountering ten lepers in Luke 17.

They called to Him, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us.”

“Go show yourselves to the priests,” Jesus replied.

At that point, if I had been one of the lepers, I probably would have argued. .

“Lord, I know how this works. First, you heal me, then I go to the priests, and they declare I’m healed.”

None of the lepers had my mindset, though. The rest of verse 14 contains seven powerful words: “And as they went, they were healed.”

They didn’t debate healing. They took action. Action that led to healing. “And as they went, they were healed.”

As those lepers had to take action, so did I. Thus, I combined my prayers with making calls and following leads. And I landed happily.

Father God, thank You for inviting us to take part in the miracles for which we ask.
