Breakfast with Jesus

By Sylvia Schroeder

“Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples ventured to question Him, ‘Who are You?’ knowing that it was the Lord.” John 21:12; NASB.

My husband enters the bedroom with a breakfast tray held high like a majordomo. I move my Bible and journal aside and he rests a morning cappuccino complete with eggs and bacon on my lap. It is an endearment of sorts from a morning person to one who hates the break of day. Early in our marriage my husband chose to help me be disciplined in connecting with God every morning by assuming breakfast tasks… or maybe it was in self-defense. While he rises cheerfully and spends time alone with Jesus. I pull myself out of the sleep hole, a big accomplishment, and drag my Bible and journal across my lap.

As lovely as breakfast in bed may seem, the feast that awaits me as I open the Bible, is much greater and deeper. God’s Word far outweighs the blessing of coffee and toast.

After Jesus’ crucifixion, the disciples must have felt displaced and uprooted. They must have wondered what it all meant and what would happen. Then early one morning, they saw Jesus waiting on shore. He had bread and fish on the fire.

He invited, “Come and have breakfast…”

Life has moments difficult, busy and sorrowful. We wonder how to go on. Jesus bids us to “Come.” The day ahead is too full to NOT first meet with Jesus. Weakness of spirit leaves no option but to first find His strength. Tough tasks cannot be met without His wisdom.

He waits.

Jesus, thank you for inviting me to feast with You today.
