Get the Right Perspective

By Michelle Medlock Adams

“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!” Psalm 139:17 NLT

Waverly, my great niece, waited with great anticipation as her second grade teacher announced who would play Belle in their rendition of “Beauty and the Beast.” When her teacher came to Waverly, she smiled and said, “I think you’ll make a perfect Feather Duster.”

Feather Duster?! That was not exactly what Waverly had in mind. She’d dreamed of playing the beautiful Belle in a yellow satin gown, but it wasn’t to be. One of Waverly’s friends was given that part, and Waverly was happy for her. So, Waverly learned her lines as Babette, the maid of the castle who is transformed into a feather duster, and helped put on a very entertaining play.

This past February when Walt Disney Studios released the new “Beauty and the Beast,” my sister, who is also Waverly’s Mimi, took her to see it. As the movie was about to begin, Waverly leaned over to my sister and whispered, “I was an AMAZING feather duster.”

I love that so much. You see, Waverly didn’t remember that she wasn’t chosen as Belle in her second grade play, rather she remembered that she was an AMAZING feather duster. It’s all about our perspective, isn’t it?

How’s your perspective today?  Or, to put it in Waverly’s terms, do you see yourself as an AMAZING feather duster? God wants us to see ourselves as He sees us, and He thinks we’re amazing because He created us. The Word says that His thoughts about us are precious and numerous! I want you to remember that the next time you face a disappointment in life—when you don’t get that job promotion you thought you deserved; when you aren’t chosen as the speaker for your club’s annual charity event; or when your manuscript is rejected by the publisher you thought would love it. Meditate on how God sees you, and begin to see yourself in that same light.

Pray this with me: Father, thank You for loving me like You do and for always seeing the best in me. Help me to see myself through Your eyes and gain that God confidence that only comes through You. In the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.”
