“OK kids,” I call with a loud voice. Eight grandchildren are lined up at the kitchen counter. “Pay attention.”
But the noise level, the chatter, the excitement does not abate. Not even one decibel. The spread is laid out, ready to be eaten and I need to give a simple instruction before lunch. To get their entire attention is like herding a flock of geese, and just as noisy.
There is an order that I’d like to establish to make sure everyone gets their food and takes it to the table, but it is obvious that comprehension and follow through is going to be minimal. The same thing happens when I don’t give God my full attention.
The Pharisees and Sadducees, Jewish leaders of Jesus’ day, were so intent on their agenda, they missed the entire message. They made great shows of religion, but Jesus was interested in their hearts. They neglected what Jesus called the greatest commandment, to love God wholly.
Following orders is much easier when we listen well.
A lot of things vie for my attention and I am distracted easily. My mind wanders in church when I should listen. My cell phone captures my attention when I ought to engage with others. A to-do list fragments my thoughts.
Christ speaks to our souls through the pages of His Word. Love for Him is nurtured by knowledge of Him. When we take the time to listen to Him in quiet surrender, loving Him wholly follows.
Jesus, thank you for loving me. Help me to love You with my whole heart, mind and soul today.
