A suburban Chicago gym is facing fierce backlash after staff allegedly blocked federal agents from entering the business while they were pursuing a wanted individual, allowing the suspect to get away without being taken into custody.

The confrontation unfolded Wednesday morning at VASA Fitness on North Avenue in Villa Park, Illinois, according to a statement released by the Villa Park Police Department. The agents have been widely identified online as ICE, though local police referred only to “a federal law enforcement agency.”

Villa Park police said officers responded around 9 a.m. after receiving information that federal agents were “attempting to apprehend a wanted individual.”

According to police, the federal agency attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspect bolted.

“During the encounter, the subject exited the vehicle and fled on foot into Vasa Fitness,” the Villa Park Police Department said in its news release. “Federal agents attempted to enter the business in an effort to locate the individual but were denied access by Vasa Fitness staff.”

In other words, federal agents were in the middle of a law enforcement operation, a wanted person ran into a private gym, and the staff reportedly shut the door on the very people trying to make an arrest.

That decision proved costly.

“After a brief period on scene, the federal agency concluded its operations and departed the area without taking the individual into custody,” police said.

Patch reported that VASA Fitness staff “denied the agents access,” citing police. The outlet said the department did not identify the federal agency and that a message seeking comment had been left.

Police said there were no reported injuries and no ongoing threat to the public, but the incident raises an obvious question: Why would any business stand between federal law enforcement officers and a wanted fugitive?

VASA Fitness markets itself as a gym for “Community,” “Everybody” and “All Levels,” but critics say the company owes the public an explanation after one of its Illinois locations allegedly prevented federal agents from doing their jobs.

The company’s Villa Park location sits at 300 W. North Ave., according to VASA’s website, and is open to members for most of the day. But when federal agents arrived in pursuit of a wanted person, police say the doors were not exactly open.

The incident comes amid a growing national hostility toward immigration enforcement officers, who have faced protests, obstruction and political attacks while carrying out federal law.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says its mission is to protect America “from the cross-border crime and illegal immigration that threaten national security and public safety.” That mission becomes far more dangerous when businesses or activists decide they have the power to decide whether federal agents may capture a suspect.

Villa Park police said they responded “to ensure public safety and maintain scene security.” But by the time the standoff ended, the wanted individual was gone, the federal agents had left empty-handed, and VASA Fitness had some serious explaining to do.
