White parents need not apply.
The principal of Northside Elementary School in Midway, Kentucky, told parents in a letter posted by the popular Twitter page, Libs of Tik Tok, that not enough minorities were on the school council.
“So Kentucky requires a race quota for school council even if it means ignoring the results of an election? Wow,” the account tweeted.
The principal, Joshua Powers, said in the statement that he would be calling an election for “an additional minority parent.”
“Our school is greatly enriched by the diversity of our community and it is important for our school council to reflect that diversity,” the statement read. “The most recent elections have not resulted in any minority members on the council. Kentucky law requires all schools with 8% or more minority students to seek a minority parent representative. Pursuant thereto, I am calling for the election of an additional minority parent. Our teachers will also select an additional teacher representative as well.”

The statement also included what races the candidates had to be in order to run for this position. The list included: American Indian, Alaskan-Native, African American, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander.
“The minority parent member of the council is elected by all parents and receives training coach year that he or she serves,” said the statement. “The new council member will serve from March 1, 2022 until June 30th, 2022. Minority Members may seek reelection if they wish.”
As of now, Harrison County Schools have not addressed this incident.
