Residents in a woke Memphis neighborhood have declared war on a Catholic church. They say the church’s bells are driving them batty.
But complaining neighbors accused the church’s pastor Father Yoelvis Gonzalez of adding a public address system to blast the “annoying” bells all over town.
”Those church bells, 13 hours a day of them, every half hour and we can’t get any relief,” one resident told ABC24.
Well, that’s not exactly true. The bells are not rung before 8 a.m. and not after 9 p.m. (with the exceptions of Christmas Eve Mass at Night and the Solemn Easter Vigil).
Hundreds of residents in the Vollintine – Evergreen Historic District took to a public forum to express their outrage at the priest’s refusal to silence the bells.
Father Gonzalez is boldly standing by the sonic tradition, telling one upset neighbor that the bells are an invitation to go to church.
“Our ringing of bells is a proclamation of our faith and the exercise of our religious observance and duty,” reads a statement on the church’s website.
KWAM host Ben Deeter blasted the “woke” Midtown residents.
“The whole point of the bells is to honor God and remind them to go to church, so I can see why this is bothering the woke crowd,” Deeter said.
The neighbors said they plan on taking the church to court.
“It seems to me the heathen neighbors should be grateful to the Catholic church,” said national radio host and Memphis resident Todd Starnes. “Not only do the bells remind you there’s a Higher Power, the ringing also drowns out the sounds of gunfire.”
