U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (D-IL) and his wife have been searching for answers after their 17-year-old daughter died in her sleep in June.
Gwen Carsten was found unresponsive in her bedroom.
The Castens called Gwen a “healthy 2022 teenager” who was “fully vaccinated” and had tested positive for COVID-19 more than once in recent months, but never experienced symptoms.
“She was fully vaccinated, and quarantined after occasional positive, asymptomatic COVID tests during the omicron wave,” the family said in a statement.
“She was fine, and then her heart stopped,” the devastated Casten family wrote in a statement.
Medical examiners now say that the teenager girl died of a “sudden cardiac arhrythmia.”
“We don’t know what caused the arrhythmia, and likely never will,” the family said.
They said she “ate well, exercised, got regular check-ups, didn’t suffer from any behavioral health issues, and had close relationships with family and friends.”
The medical experts just can’t seem to understand how a fully-vaccinated teenager could die so suddenly.
“We are left grasping at the wrong end of random chance,” the Casten family said.
“None of us know when our last heartbeat will come. The best we can hope for is that when our loved ones do pass, we will have no regrets about the time we were lucky enough to share,” their letter concluded. “So hug the folks you love a little harder today. Be present in their lives. And spread your love a little farther. Because in the end, it’s all that remains.”
Would you take a moment and pray for the Casten family?
