UPDATE from Matt Walsh: “Someone” in AOC’s abuela’s family told GoFundMe that she won’t take the money, even though AOC previously claimed that her grandma was in dire straits (and it was Trump’s fault). AOC still hasn’t acknowledged this effort or thanks us.
A GoFundMe, largely supported by conservatives, far exceeded its goal Friday to help Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s grandmother in Puerto Rico.
The self-described Democratic socialist wrote on Twitter that her “abuela,” who lives in Puerto Rico, has recently been removed from her home due to hurricane damage. She then blamed former President Trump for blocking the relief money that would have gone to people like her grandmother in Puerto Rico.
Many online were quick to point out AOC could easily help her “abuela,” given her lavish lifestyle. One Twitter user named Tom Elliot wrote, “[m]aybe you can sell your Tesla and help out grandma with the $500 it would take to fix that ceiling?”
In order to provide some actual assistance, Matt Walsh, host of The Matt Walsh Show, decided to lend a helping hand to AOC’s grandmother.
Walsh launched a GoFundMe Friday morning with a goal of $48,990. He wrote on Twitter, “[a]s you’ve heard, @AOC’s abuela is living in a dilapidated home that was ravaged by Hurricane Maria. AOC is unable to help her own grandma for whatever reason, so I have set up this Go Fund Me campaign to save her home. Please give if you can.”
He is even donating to the cause himself. Walsh made the first donation of $499 because that’s the cost of a monthly lease payment for a Tesla.
Other conservatives including, Michael Knowles, Candace Owens, and Ben Shapiro have donated the same $499.
National radio host and best-selling author Todd Starnes praised Walsh’s efforts as “brilliant” on the Todd Starnes Show.
As of the writing of this article, the GoFundMe has raised over $100,000 in only a few hours.
