BREAKING: More than 50 injured in Montana Amtrak Derailment

DEVELOPING STORY: Amtrak’s Empire Builder train derailed near Joplin, Montana. At least five cars left the tracks and several tipped over. There are approximately 147 passengers and 13 crew members on board. There are reports of injuries. We will update this post throughout the evening. UPDATE: 10:04 P.M.

The New York Times reports more than 50 passengers were injured.

Amanda Frickel, the disaster and emergency services coordinator for Hill County, Mont., said in an interview that more than one person had been killed, but that the authorities were not yet releasing any more details.

She said “well over” 50 people had been injured.

Ms. Frickel said the train, which was headed west, derailed just outside Joplin, Mont., which is about 200 miles north of Helena.

UPDATE: 10:01 P.M.

AMTRAK STATEMENT: “At approximately 4 p.m. MT, Empire Builder train 7/27 derailed five cars near Joplin, MT. There are approximately 147 passengers and 13 crew members onboard, with injuries reported. Amtrak is working with the local authorities to transport injured passengers, and safely evacuate all other passengers,” Amtrak said in a statement.

UPDATE: 9:44 P.M.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Dept. is reporting at least three fatalities, according to CBS News.
