CNN’s Devan Cole shocked a lot of readers recently by making the statement “[i]t’s not possible to know a person’s gender identity at birth”.
First of all, I believe that Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana made a rather strong but factual statement denying this claim made by CNN.
Devan Cole is a breaking news and political writer for the infamous network and this article was written in response to Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota banning transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports.
In his article, Cole mentions that “Noem do not explicitly mention transgender athletes, they reference the supposed harms of the participation of “males” in women’s athletics — an echo of the transphobic claim”.
However, it’s not a transphobic claim, it’s a real concern.
PragerU put out a video last year where Selina Soule, a female runner, spoke out about this issue.
In the video, she said that when she was a sophomore in high school, she was one of the top five female runners in the state of Connecticut. After one track meet, she and all of the other female runners where beaten by two biological boys that identified as girls.
Ms. Soule said that it wasn’t even neck and neck, the two boys blew the other girls out of the water.
For an athlete who has trained her entire life to be beaten by someone who has a clear advantage is, as you can imagine, very frustrating.
Writers over at CNN, such as Devan Cole, claim that not allowing transgender students to compete in sports is simply not fair.
Alphonso David, the President of The Human Rights Campaign, said that “[t]ransgender kids are kids, and they deserve the right to live full lives free from abuse, stigmatization, and danger.”
This also applies to non-transgender kids. They deserve to be offered a fair shot at competing on a level playing field and letting their hard work pay off.
