An ESPN sportswriter complained Monday that he can’t enjoy the opening ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics because the American flag reminded him of Jan. 6.
William “Bill” Rhoden of ESPN’s “The Undefeated” told “CBS This Morning” his view changed this year after covering five of them.
“I love the opening ceremonies, march of countries,” he said. “then I realized, you know, man, particularly after these last four years, I had it wrong. Nationalism is not good. We’ve seen the rise of White nationalism. Nationalism is not good, and also, this whole idea — I keep thinking back on the Capitol riots, and I saw a lot of, you know, U.S. flags.”
Todd Starnes, the national radio host and best-selling author, called Rhoden a moron.
“He’s an unpatriotic moron,” Starnes said. “In one breath he lavishes praise about the opening ceremony and the march of nations while at the same time condemning nationalities. If this guy gest triggered by Old Glory, maybe he’d feel more comfortable rooting for the Iranians.”
Rhoden continued.
“So now when I see the flag and the flag raised, what….America am I living in? You know, are the ones that don’t think, you know, we should be here?” he added.
Rhoden said the Olympics should be a time for “soul searching” and claiming the Olympians are being “held hostage” because of the coronavirus pandemic not being over.
“Of course they should’ve cancelled the event,” he said.
