BULLETIN: Explosive Sound Heard From Virginia to Maryland

DEVELOPING STORY: A massive explosive noise rattled windows and nerves from Maryland to Virginia. Watch video of the blast below after the advertisement plays. The video was filmed by CJ Persad from his back porch.

Was the blast caused by a sonic boom, a bomb or a meteorite? Television stations across the DC area say their newsroom phones were lit up with call from concerned citizens.

DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management confirmed that people heard what they heard around 3:15 p.m.

“We are aware of reports from communities throughout the National Capital Region of a loud “boom” this afternoon. There is no threat at this time,” they wrote on Twitter.

“Was that a sonic boom or an explosion? I thought the house was coming down here in Edgewater MD. In this video you can see it even popped up my attic access panel, then you can hear the house shaking for a few seconds,” one eyewitness wrote on social media.

This could was recording a music video when it was disrupted by the blast. Watch below:

Another wrote, “Huge boom or explosion in Washington DC a couple of minutes ago. Seems people from Northern Virginia to Maryland heard it. Shook homes here on Capitol Hill. Does anyone know what it was?”

One eyewitness said she was “in my yard when it hit and I felt the wave and heard the air cracking for several seconds after.”

Fairfax County Police say it’s believed the sound came from an aircraft – possibly a sonic boom.

From The Daily Mail:

A small plane that flew over a restricted area of Washington DC likely prompted the Pentagon to scramble an interceptor fighter jet Sunday afternoon.

The private Cessna jet from Elizabethton, Tennessee appeared unresponsive as it came close to both the US Capitol building and the White House at around 3.30pm, Federal Aviation Administration officials say.

Shortly thereafter, US military authorities confirmed that an F-16 fighter plane broke the sound barrier over Chesapeake Bay, causing a loud ‘explosion’ sound that shook houses and created widespread panic.
