There are many stories of patriotic Ukrainians who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their nation from the Russian invaders. Perhaps the most inspiring story came from Snake Island in the Black Sea.
A group of border guards stationed on the island were ordered by the Russians to surrender under the threat of an attack.
According to a purported audio exchange, as the Russians approached Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, the Russian officer says: “This is a military warship. This is a Russian military warship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and needless casualties. Otherwise, you will be bombed.”
A Ukrainian soldier responds: “Russian warship, go f*** yourself.”
Those were the final known words heard from the island. It is believed that all 13 border guards were killed in the attack.
“All border guards died heroically but did not give up. They will be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. “May the memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine live forever,” he said.
It was the Ukrainian version of “Live free, or die.”
May God bless the brave men and women of Ukraine as they fight in the cities and the countryside to defend their nation from the evil Russian invaders.
