The Diocese of Des Moines incited backlash from progressives and praise from conservatives for its new “gender identity” policies governing how gender dysphoria is handled in schools and parishes.

The seven rules range from barring the use of preferred pronouns to banning “medications for the purpose of gender reassignment.”

Additionally, the new policies insist students and parishioners dress and use restrooms and locker rooms that are consistent with their biological sex.

Leftists in Iowa slammed the diocese led by Bishop William Joensen for protecting the children under their care from the ravaging consequences of woke gender ideology.

Democratic State Sen. Claire Celsi even went so far as to claim Jesus would disapprove of the diocese’s new rules.

“These schools want public dollars and want to treat kids in a way that might cause them to commit suicide. This is not what Jesus would do,” Celsi said per a Fox News report.

Not all of the reactions to the diocese’s announcement were critical.

“Finally, a church that is acting like a church,” one fan on the decision said according to the Daily Mail.

The final policy in the announcement assures that while the diocese does not affirm gender identities inconsistent with one’s biological sex, all students and parishioners struggling with gender dysphoria are to be treated with charity and respect.

“Parishes, schools, and other Catholic institutions or organizations should be ever mindful, in accord with the policies of this document, to practice charity and to respect the personal dignity
of individuals who may express tension or concerns about their biological sex,” the policy states.

In a statement following the release of the new policies, the diocese affirmed that any persons experiencing gender dysphoria are “unconditionally loved by Jesus Christ and by the Church, and that they are vital members of the Body of Christ who have a home in the family of God.”
