Tony Dungy is a two-time Super Bowl champion. Once as a player. Another as coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
He is also a born-again Christian. And he is pro-life.
Tony Dungy was one of thousands of people who attended the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C.
He posted a message on Twitter saying he was there to support unborn babies who don’t have a voice.
In response – a number of sports reporters and commentators smeared Coach Dungy as a right-wing extremist.
David Zirin, editor of The Nation, accused the NFL and NBC Sports of coddling right-wing extremism — accusing Dungy of being an anti-gay bigot.
“This is a staggering indictment of the politics the NFL and the network’s partners allow and the kind that they condemn. When someone like, gee, I don’t know, Colin Kaepernick steps up and kneels down to end police violence and racial inequity, he becomes a pariah. Meanwhile, Dungy is held up as a deeply religious man and nearly a patron saint of the league. Dungy has used his devoutness as a cover for his anti-gay rhetoric and sharing platforms with unapologetic bigots,” he wrote.
There was a time when the sports world was overtly conservative and religious. But those days are long gone.
These days athletes are judged on their wokeness, not their abilities.
Just ask Tim Tebow and NHL player Ivan Provorov.
But what really grinds my gears is that many evangelical Christian “celebrities” have distanced themselves from Dungy.
Where are all of the so-called Christian news anchors and hosts on Conservative television? The ones who weep about their faith while hocking their latest best-selling book on cable television?
Jason Whitlock called out his fellow Christians in a blistering series of Twitter messages.
“The backlash against Tony Dungy is well-orchestrated and not remotely organic,” he wrote. “The motive is to outlaw a biblical worldview. The anti-God agenda is so strong and obvious. I’m so sick of alleged Christians sitting silent while someone like Tony has his character assassinated.”
“Cowards! All of you. So scared of your secular masters. You choose your satanic liberal puppet masters over Tony Dungy, a man who has done nothing but help us. Cowards! Nothing infuriates me more,” he added.
Cowards, indeed. But that’s to be expected when getting good ratings trumps doing the right thing.
