WH Calls on Pence to Apologize for Cracking ‘Homophobic’ Buttigieg Joke at Roast

Former Vice President Mike Pence triggered the White House and the husband of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg after he cracked a joke at his expense during an appearance at the Gridiron Club dinner.

Was Vice President Pence's joke about Buttigieg homophobic?

The annual dinner brings together prominent journalists and politicians for a night of roasting — no cameras or recording devices allowed. And the jokes have traditionally been biting.

Here’s the joke that set off the White House:

“When Pete’s two children were born, he took two months maternity leave, where upon thousands of travelers were stranded in airports, the air traffic system shut down, airplanes nearly collided in midair,” Pence said. “I mean, Pete Buttigieg is the only person in human history to have a child and all the rest of us get postpartum depression.”

Funny, right?

“The former vice president’s homophobic joke about Secretary Buttigieg was offensive and inappropriate, all the more so because he treated women suffering from postpartum depression as a punchline,” White House press secretary and self-declared lesbian Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. “He should apologize to women and LGBTQ people, who are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect.”

Clearly, when it comes to humor the transportation secretary and the mister are — how shall I put this — delicate.

“An honest question for you, Mike Pence, after your attempted joke this weekend. If your grandchild was born prematurely and placed on a ventilator at two months old – their tiny fingers wrapped around yours as the monitors beep in the background – where would you be?” Chasten Buttigieg snarled on Twitter.

Vice President Pence may not have been aware of an unwritten rule in woke America. It’s okay to poke fun at heterosexual lawmakers, but heaven help the person who cracks a joke about a gay lawmaker. It’s verboten.

It’s not so much that Buttigieg is smug, it’s that he just doesn’t have a sense of humor.
