The Supreme Court upheld in a 6-3 decision Thursday two Republican-backed ballot restrictions.
The court ruled that the state can restrict ballot harvesting and the submission of provisional ballots outside of one’s home precinct, saying neither violate the Voting Rights Act.
The decision overturned a ruling by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
“We now hold that the en banc court misunderstood and misapplied §2 and that it exceeded its authority in rejecting the District Court’s factual finding on the issue of legislative intent,” Justice Samuel Alito.
It was celebrated by Republicans, including RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
“Today’s United States Supreme Court ruling is a resounding victory for election integrity and the rule of law. Democrats were attempting to make Arizona ballots less secure for political gain, and the Court saw right through their partisan lies,” McDaniel wrote.
She added: “In Arizona and across the nation, states know best how to manage their own elections. The RNC is proud to have worked closely with the Arizona GOP to support this historic victory, and we will continue our comprehensive efforts to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”
