President Biden has been placed on a CPAP machine to treat “longstanding sleep apnea,” a potentially serious disorder that can result in breathing to stop during sleep, the White House confirmed Wednesday.
The oldest president, dubbed “Sleepy Joe” by former President Trump during the 2020 campaign, was seen with visible marks on his face ahead of his “Bidenomics” speech.
Bloomberg News asked Biden administration officials about his condition and the use of the device. Two White House officials confirmed Biden’s use of a CPAC machine to the outlet.
“Biden has begun using a CPAP machine, per sources. The device is to treat longstanding sleep apnea, one of the people said. As Biden departed the White House this morning for Chicago, indentations from the CPAP straps could be seen on his face,” Jennifer Jacobs, Bloomberg senior White House reporter, tweeted with images of Biden.
Despite concerns over Biden’s mental capabilities, he is seeking a second term.
“People with sleep apnea are at higher risk for car crashes, work-related accidents, and other medical problems,” according to the National Library of Medicine.
“You are more at risk for sleep apnea if you are overweight, male, or have a family history or small airways,” it added.
