DEVELOPING STORY: Former Vice President Mike Pence called out his former boss in a fiery address delivered at the Federalist Society.
“There are those in our party who believe that as the presiding officer over a joint session of Congress that I possess unilateral authority to reject electoral college results,” Pence told the crowd.
“I heard this week that President Trump said that I had the right to overturn the election,” he added. “President Trump is wrong.”
“I had no right to overturn the election,” he declared. “The presidency belongs to the American people and to the American people alone.”
The former vice president, who is considering a run for the White House in 2024, said under the U.S. Constitution that he had no right to choose the president.
There is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president,” Pence said.
