Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation which Republicans are slamming as a “coverup.”
The Biden DOJ will be responsible for the “ongoing investigation” into Hunter Biden “as well as for any other matters that arose or may arise from that investigation.”
Garland named David Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware investigating the financial and business dealings of the first son, as the special counsel ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Weiss asked to be appointed special counsel on Tuesday, according to Garland.
“Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel,” Garland said.
Republicans slammed the appointment amid the DOJ probing former President Trump, Biden’s leading opponent in next year’s election.
A spokesperson for Trump released the following statement:
Crooked Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, and the entire Biden Crime Family have been protected by the Justice Department for decades even though there is overwhelming evidence and credible testimony detailing their wrongdoing of lying to the American people and selling out the country to foreign enemies for the Biden Cartel’s own financial gain. If this special counsel is truly independent – even though he failed to bring proper charges after a four year investigation and he appears to be trying to move the case to a more Democrat-friendly venue – he will quickly conclude that Joe Biden, his troubled son Hunter, and their enablers, including the media, which colluded with the 51 intelligence officials who knowingly misled the public about Hunter’s laptop, should face the required consequences.
“This move by AG Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of @GOPoversight’s mounting evidence of President Biden’s role in his family’s schemes selling ‘the brand’ for millions of dollars to foreign nationals,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) agreed.
“First, David Weiss said he didn’t have the power he needed and wanted special counsel status. Then, he said he had all the power he needs. Now, he gets special counsel status because he didn’t really have the power he needs?” Jordan posted on X. “Something’s not right.”
This news comes on the same day Weiss’ prosecutors acknowledged the gun and tax charges against the president’s son will most likely have to be resolved at a trial in California or Washington, D.C.
The Justice Department’s Hunter Biden investigation could implicate President Biden. Breitbart News reports a witness who testified before the jury was asked to identify the “big guy.”
