DEVELOPING STORY: Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has made good on a threat to file a motion to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from office. The Republican firebrand officially submitted a motion to vacate the chair.
Gaetz conceded that McCarthy’s speakership will more than likely be saved by Democrats.
“Kevin McCarthy’s true coalition partner on all things of substance has been the Democrats this Congress,” Gaetz told reporters on the steps of the Capitol on Monday, pointing to how McCarthy relied on Democratic votes to pass a debt and budget deal earlier this year and a bill to avert a government shutdown on Saturday.
“If Kevin McCarthy works for Democrats and utilizes Democrats in order to keep power, that would be consistent with everything we’ve seen from him,” Gaetz added.
Conservative talk show host Mark Levin has been pummeling Gaetz — accusing him of being a fraud.
“This clown is a Benedict Arnold,” Levin wrote on Twitter. “He killed a CR slashing spending by 8% and strengthening border security. Now he plots and schemes with the most radical Marxist Democrats in the House, including AOC and the Progressive Caucus. Reject this demagogue. HE is the uniparty leader. And he has no intention of cutting spending or securing the border.”
